Returning to work after several weeks of holiday can be difficult, and workers should not expect to resume at full speed immediately, according to DR. Einar Baldursson, a lecturer in work psychology at Aalborg University, said the transition naturally requires time.

Holiday and working life activate people in different ways. Moving from a broad way of living during a holiday to the focused demands of work can be demanding, Baldursson said. Starting too intensely on the first day may unnecessarily trigger the body’s stress system and lead to strain reactions.

“The best way to do it is not to start too hard,” Baldursson said. He recommends using the first day to gain an overview and gradually return to the normal work rhythm.

Spending time with colleagues and showing interest in their holiday experiences can also help strengthen workplace community and wellbeing, he said.

Finding the return to work difficult after a summer holiday is completely normal, Baldursson said. A period of adjustment is a natural part of the shift from holiday to work.
