Police say sudden slowdown caused fatal Kotka boat race crash

Police believe a leading boat slowed sharply before a marked turn, leaving a following boat unable to avoid a collision during a race in Kotka, Yle reports. The driver of the leading boat was killed.

The crash happened just before a turn marked by a buoy. According to police, the boat in front turned or veered sharply towards the turn before the buoy, causing its speed to drop. The boat behind it did not have time to move out of the way.

Police have interviewed witnesses and the driver of the other boat. Possible reasons for the sudden turn include the effect of waves, a driving error, or a combination of the two.

Police said there is no reason to suspect a crime. The investigation continues as a determination of the cause of death. The Accident Investigation Centre is conducting its own investigation together with police.

A preliminary inspection of the boat found no technical fault.
