Border Guard investigates suspected crossing from Russia into Finland

Yle reports that the Finnish Border Guard is investigating a suspected illegal border crossing from Russia into Finland in Ilomantsi.

The North Karelia Border Guard District detained a foreign national late on Saturday evening. The person is suspected of crossing the national border through terrain in the Mutalahti area.

The person was located based on observations made by the Border Guard. The detention was carried out calmly, and the person applied for asylum in Finland.

The Border Guard has launched a preliminary investigation into a suspected state border offence. North Karelia’s border commissioner has contacted the border commissioner for Russia’s Suojärvi area about the incident.
