North Jutland faces very high fire risk as dry weather persists

Several parts of North Jutland currently face very high fire danger, prompting Diana Sørensen, director of Nordjyllands Beredskab, the emergency services organisation in North Jutland, to urge caution, DR reports.

Hot, sunny and dry weather has sharply increased the risk of fires. According to Beredskabsstyrelsen’s fire danger index, fires can easily be started by an ember or a small flame under the current conditions.

“We are taking the situation quite seriously right now,” Sørensen said.

Nordjyllands Beredskab recorded three simultaneous wildfires in three different parts of North Jutland on Thursday and five smaller wildfires on Friday.

Sørensen urged people to be careful with fire near nature and to consider whether using it is necessary at the moment. She specifically advised people not to use weed burners, saying they should remain in the shed.

The fire danger is currently very high on Læsø and around Brønderslev, Østervrå, Aalborg and Hjørring. The index is also red on Mors and in parts of Thy.

The dry weather is also increasing the risk during the harvest. Farmers have started bringing in crops, and a single stone hitting a combine harvester can ignite both the machine and the field. Strong winds can then spread the fire quickly, Sørensen said, referring to recent incidents in Sæby, Nibe and Hobro.
