Colder water rises in the Bothnian Sea

The water in the Bothnian Sea is currently colder and clearer than usual, Yle reports, citing the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

The change is caused by upwelling, in which wind pushes surface water away from the area. Colder water from deeper down then rises to replace it.

According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, upwelling occurs every summer in the Baltic Sea.
