Sweden drops course requirement for private driving practice

Sweden has abolished the requirement for an introductory course for people who want to practise driving privately, SVT reports.

The course had been mandatory for both supervisors and learners since 2006. The government said the requirement created a barrier to private driving practice and limited learners’ ability to practise with several different supervisors.

The Swedish parliament approved the legislative change in April, removing the course requirement from 1 August.

Other requirements still apply. Supervisors must be at least 24 years old, have held a driving licence for at least five of the past 10 years and submit an application to the Swedish Transport Agency.

Learners must have a valid driving permit, according to the Swedish Transport Agency.
