A female teacher from Uusimaa suspected of sexual offences has been released from pre-trial detention following a decision by the lead investigator, Itä-Uudenmaan District Court confirmed on Thursday.

The court stated that the lead investigator ordered the release, but case documents have been classified, preventing further disclosure. Earlier, the district court had remanded the woman, born in 1983, in custody on suspicion of aggravated sexual abuse of a child.

In practice, the court’s decision means the conditions for detention under the Coercive Measures Act are no longer met or that there is insufficient evidence in the case.

The lead investigator is on summer leave. Acting Detective Inspector Marko Särkkä of Itä-Uudenmaan Police declined to comment due to confidentiality rules.

Yle previously reported that the teacher is suspected of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, with alleged offences occurring between 1 June 2024 and 2 July 2026.

A municipality in Uusimaa suspended the woman from her position on 13 July 2026 pending a final decision. The suspension was based on a clause allowing such action if an employee is suspected of a crime outside their official duties.

The municipality stated the suspect had been continuously employed since May 2024, having previously worked as a short-term substitute in various roles. According to Yle, she worked as a class teacher at least during the past academic year.

Prosecutors must file charges in the case by mid-September.
