The Faroese government plans to open a boatbuilding workshop at Tjóðsavnið and promote boatbuilding development to ensure the preservation of Faroese boats and traditions, according to a statement to parliament.
Fewer boats are being built and the number of boatbuilders is declining, despite boatbuilding being a key part of Faroese cultural heritage. The government noted that by inscribing Faroese boatbuilding on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage, the Faroes committed to safeguarding the craft and its associated traditions for future generations.
The initiative will involve collaboration with local municipalities to create favorable conditions for maintaining Faroese boats.
