Century-old epic flies off shelves after film release

Danish bookshops and libraries report a surge in demand for Homer’s Odyssey following the mid-July premiere of Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation, The Odyssey, which drew over 80,000 viewers in its opening weekend.

At Bog&Idé in Middelfart, only three copies remain—all in English—after Danish editions sold out. Butikschef Daniel Eis said the film has sparked fresh interest, particularly among younger readers, and that more stock is on the way.

Libraries in Odense are also struggling to meet demand. Jens Bang, head of public services at Odense Libraries, said all versions, including children’s editions, are checked out. He noted the film may make the complex text more accessible, though he doubts the surge will last.
