Horse owner calls for action against toxic plant

A horse owner in Hjørring has launched a citizen’s proposal urging authorities to combat engbrandbæger (meadow saffron), a toxic plant that can sicken or kill horses if consumed in large quantities, DR reports.

Lisa Andreasen, who owns four horses, says the plant’s spread has escalated this year. Her proposal, which has gathered 667 signatures, demands political intervention to mandate its removal, comparing it to the legal requirement to control invasive giant hogweed.

“We do everything to remove it from our grazing areas, but it’s useless if neighbours don’t do the same,” Andreasen said. She described horses developing exzema-like sores from nibbling the plant.

Biologist Morten D. D. Hansen disputes the need for action, noting horses naturally avoid the plant due to its bitter taste. “It’s like throwing candy and broccoli into a kindergarten—the broccoli stays,” he said.

Hansen added that meadow saffron is a native Danish species and a vital pollen and nectar source for insects, hosting a high number of them.
