Faroese government to abolish tourist accommodation tax

The Faroese government plans to eliminate the tourist accommodation tax, currently set at 20 krona per night for stays in the Faroe Islands, though it can exceed 200 krona in some cases, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

Farmers will be permitted to charge visitors directly under the new proposal. The government also intends to review existing regulations on sustainable tourism, removing the requirement for municipal tourism plans to be approved in the capital, Tórshavn.

Officials stated that tourism should align with local desires and benefit the communities and natural sites visitors wish to experience. The changes aim to grant greater decision-making power and responsibility to local authorities and those managing the areas tourists visit.
