Finland’s national grid operator Fingrid will sever a fibre-optic connection to Russia, the company confirmed to Yle on Wednesday.

The leased cable’s contract is expiring and will not be renewed, a Fingrid spokesperson said. Electricity transmission between the countries already ended in 2022.

Russian newspaper Kommersant reported the link would be cut at the turn of the year, describing it as multiple cables, though Fingrid maintains it involves only one. The company added that the loss of the connection is unlikely to significantly affect data traffic between Finland and Russia.
