Drivers repeatedly crash into Säkylä roundabout despite safety measures

Drivers in Säkylä have repeatedly driven into the centre of a roundabout or over it into a ditch, with the latest incident occurring last week, reports Yle.

The roundabout, completed in 2013 on regional road 204 bypassing Säkylä centre, features vegetation, lighting, a flagpole, and a replica of the Pori Brigade’s musician statue. Safety measures include clear signage, road markings, two sets of transverse rumble strips, and information boards.

Traffic safety engineer Jaakko Klang of Southwest Finland’s Vitality Centre states the roundabout has no structural issues. He attributes the accidents to driver inattention, often due to distractions like mobile phones. Speed limits are reduced to 50 km/h well before the roundabout when approaching from the south.

Senior Constable Jari Kallio of Southwest Finland Police notes most incidents occur at night or dawn, often involving drivers from Turku. Contributing factors may include intoxication, driver age, or poor weather. Police conduct speed checks near the roundabout when resources allow.

Over the past five years, one personal injury accident has been recorded at the site in police statistics, while rescue services report four incidents. Similar issues have occurred in neighbouring Eura, where vehicles have struck the stone structures of the Linnan kajo art installation in the Souppaa roundabout.
