Fate of MP Timo Vornanen uncertain after conviction

The future of Finnish MP Timo Vornanen remains uncertain after his conditional prison sentence became final, Yle reports, with parliament now able to decide whether he can continue in office.

Vornanen was convicted of assault, two counts of illegal threats, and a firearms offence, stemming from an incident at a Helsinki bar and its vicinity in April 2024. A district court handed down an eight-month suspended sentence.

Tapio Raunio, a professor of political science at the University of Tampere, noted that the crime occurred during Vornanen’s free time, not in connection with his official duties. He told news agency STT that offences unrelated to one’s professional role are generally viewed less severely than those committed in office.

Any potential expulsion process can only begin once parliament reconvenes in September. A motion from a single MP could trigger the procedure, which would require a two-thirds majority to remove Vornanen. He has stated he will resign if two-thirds of MPs demand it.

Raunio emphasised the importance of a reasoned debate on Vornanen’s position. Some party leaders, including SDP’s Tytti Tuppurainen, have already signalled opposition to his continued tenure, citing the seriousness of his actions.

Vornanen, a former member of the Finns Party, was expelled from the party in spring 2024 but has expressed interest in running as their candidate in the next election. Party group chair Jani Mäkelä said there had been no internal discussion about his return.
