Small ice cream factory in Närpiö grows despite modest ambitions

A small ice cream factory in Närpiö, Finland, has expanded rapidly in recent years, now supplying products to over 400 stores, Yle reports.

The family business, owned by brothers Magnus and Mathias Westerlund, has seen annual growth of around 30%, with turnover reaching €850,000 last year. Production has increased fivefold since its launch, currently producing 1,500 half-litre tubs daily.

Despite the growth, the company remains cautious about scaling up. “If we need to produce more ice cream, we will. It’s in the customers’ hands whether growth happens,” Magnus Westerlund said.

Plans to expand production facilities are underway, with construction expected to begin next year. The factory currently employs six people across three production lines.

Finland has nearly 30 small artisanal ice cream producers, often focusing on local ingredients and premium products. While large manufacturers like Froneri dominate the market, small producers are carving out a niche.

Finns consume the most ice cream in Europe, averaging over 14 litres per person annually. The industry generated around €370 million in sales last year.

The factory also exports small batches to Eskilstuna, Sweden, home to a strong Finnish community.
