Woman to be sentenced for Tampere apartment fire that displaced 43

A 24-year-old woman will receive her sentence today in Pirkanmaa District Court for setting fire to a pile of clothes in a Tampere apartment building last September, forcing the evacuation of 43 people.

The fire spread explosively through the seven-storey building on Kullervonkatu in the Tammela district. No one died, but the damage from fire and smoke was extensive.

The woman, who was not a resident but had a key to a first-floor apartment, admitted in January to aggravated destruction of property, acknowledging the act endangered others. She lit the fire after piling clothes and other items on the floor of the apartment. The blast shattered a window and the front door, allowing flames to reach upper floors.

Court-appointed psychiatric evaluations have assessed her mental state at the time. She told the court she had used the synthetic drug alpha-PVP before the fire and was suffering from paranoid delusions, believing certain groups, including other residents and her own family, were persecuting her. She apologised for her actions.

Dozens of claimants are seeking over €600,000 in damages. The defence argues the sum should be halved and that the psychiatric findings should influence the final compensation amount.

Aggravated destruction of property carries a sentence of 2–10 years. The prosecution’s demand depends on the mental evaluation results.

Residents began returning to their homes in December.
