Conscripts to move into temporary pavilions amid housing upgrades

New conscripts in Denmark will start their service in temporary pavilions after reports of poor living conditions in existing barracks, national broadcaster DR reports.

The pavilions, made of stacked containers with four-person rooms, new bathrooms, changing areas, and common spaces with Wi-Fi, will house around 1,600 conscripts beginning their 11-month service on August 3, 2026. The Defence Ministry describes the setup as a “clear upgrade” over the old facilities, which suffered from mold, poor ventilation, and deteriorating structures.

Colonel Kenneth Strøm, head of the conscription program, said the alternative—keeping conscripts in the old buildings—would have been the “worst solution.” At Aalborg Barracks, military consultant Søren Bo Larsen acknowledged the previous conditions were outdated and substandard. “We have to look in the mirror and ask: Can we do better? And now we are,” he said.

The temporary structures, costing between 8 and 12 billion kroner, are part of a broader effort to improve conditions and retain conscripts in the military. Permanent new barracks are under construction at 11 sites nationwide, with completion expected between 2026 and 2028.
