Heinävesi hosts Finland’s most ambitious country festival since the 1990s

Heinävesi will stage Finland’s most ambitious country music festival in decades this summer, according to Yle. The Haywater Country Music Festival, now in its second year, is the brainchild of brothers Heikki and Timo Vänttinen.

The event, held in North Karelia, has expanded this year with a larger site and more performers, most of them rising American indie-country artists. Last year’s inaugural festival drew nearly 2,000 attendees.

Janne Salmi, an expert on Finnish country music, calls the festival exceptional for its scale and the number of U.S. acts booked. He notes that while country music declined in Finland after its 1970s heyday, the genre has seen a modest revival in recent years.

The Vänttinen brothers, who discovered country music as exchange students in the U.S., describe the festival as a passion project. Heikki, now living in Texas, and Timo, a dentist in Finland, have built the event on a modest budget, focusing on artists they personally admire.

This year’s lineup includes Max Alan, Clayton Nile Young, and Fabrizio, the latter with nearly 700,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. Heikki Vänttinen hopes one of the performers will eventually break through in the U.S., drawing a parallel to Metallica’s early appearance at a small Finnish festival.
