Kotka maritime festival adds art but keeps its social heart

Kotka’s annual maritime festival, one of Finland’s largest urban events, has expanded its cultural offerings in recent years, yet for many visitors the draw remains the summer atmosphere and the chance to meet familiar faces.

This year’s programme, overseen for the second time by producer Ulrika Vilke, includes street theatre, poetry readings and a symphony orchestra performing rock classics. Traditional elements such as the archipelago market, children’s maritime day and visiting ships remain part of the event.

Among the crowd at the beer tent in Kotka’s Kantasatama harbour, opinions varied. Kati Nurminen, a local, praised the improved atmosphere and said she returns every year. “It’s about seeing friends, enjoying local music and the warm weather,” she said. For Onni Leinonen, a first-time attendee studying in Kotka, the highlight was the mix of old and new acquaintances. Sasu Siren, a former Kotka resident now living in Helsinki, admitted the art events interested him, but he was reluctant to attend alone.

Vilke, who was hired to refresh the festival, noted strong audience engagement with contemporary art performances such as those by the touring Slurps collective, which presents site-specific works ranging from street theatre to sound art. “It’s rewarding to see people gathered, enjoying what they see,” she said. Her goal is a diverse programme that appeals broadly, from food and performances to children’s activities and visiting vessels. “Not more in quantity, but certainly more in variety.”
