Over 100 gravestones toppled in Lappeenranta cemetery

More than 100 gravestones were knocked over at Joutseno cemetery in Lappeenranta earlier this week, local media Yle reports. The incident has shocked residents.

Vandalism in cemeteries occurs annually in Finland, often linked to alcohol use, according to Jani Kärkkäinen, a burial services expert at the Church Administration. He noted that thoughtlessness or protest against the church, society, or life in general can also be factors.

Statistics from the early 2000s show around 80 cases of cemetery desecration per year, with recent years seeing roughly half that number. A 2024 study by Oskari Runola found just over 100 court rulings for such offenses between 2000 and 2023, with most involving mistreatment of remains. About a third concerned damage to gravestones or burial sites.

Other common forms of cemetery vandalism include urination, defecation, and moving benches. Kärkkäinen added that cemeteries experience relatively little vandalism compared to other public infrastructure.
