Oulu murder suspect cleared within a day
A man arrested on suspicion of murder in Oulu’s Kaukovainio district was released within 24 hours after police confirmed he had no involvement in the death, Yle reports.
Police launched a homicide investigation on Wednesday after discovering the body of a man, later identified as approximately 50 years old, in Kaukovainio. A younger man was detained the same day on suspicion of murder.
By Thursday morning, police announced the suspect had been released. Rikosylikomisario Petri Savela of Oulu Police told Yle that investigators confirmed the detained man was elsewhere at the time of death. Further examination of the victim’s final hours ruled out foul play.
The case is now being treated as a death investigation. Savela acknowledged that while initial information suggested a homicide, police corrected the record as soon as new evidence emerged. He noted the public’s need for timely information but said the force may review how quickly such details are shared in future cases.
