Skod project aims to curb cigarette butt litter in Nykøbing Sjælland

GÅLEGADEN in Nykøbing Sjælland now features bright yellow signs urging smokers to dispose of cigarette butts and nicotine pouches in public bins rather than on the pavement.

The campaign, run by the volunteer group Naturplejerkorpset, is part of the Skod project funded by the municipal fund Skrald i Naturen.

Signe Eurén Mortensen, coordinator for Naturplejerkorpset, said the signs use humour and clear guidance to encourage correct disposal.

“We believe most people want to do the right thing, and the bright yellow colour makes the signs stand out on the pedestrian street,” she said. “We think this will have an impact.”

Mikkel Henriksen, chair of the Odsherred Municipality Committee for Technology, Environment and Climate, welcomed the initiative but noted the need for it was regrettable.

“It’s a great initiative, but it’s unfortunate that people still throw cigarette butts on the street instead of in bins,” he said.

Local residents also voiced support. Lars Peter Larsen, who does not smoke, said the signs would help guide behaviour.

“It’s a good reminder that butts belong in the bin,” he said. “We need to be encouraged to do the right thing, otherwise the easiest option wins.”

Naturplejerkorpset plans to return in about two weeks to assess whether the campaign has had an effect.
