Finnish population grows slightly as fertility rate edges up

Finland’s population reached about 5.65 million by the end of June, according to preliminary data from Statistics Finland.

Between January and June the country added 16 residents, driven by a net gain from international migration that exceeded domestic departures by more than 5,200 people. Births lagged deaths by nearly 6,700 during the same period.

At the regional level, Uusimaa recorded the largest increase in population, while 14 of Finland’s 19 regions saw declines. Over the first half of the year, births totaled just under 24,000, about 1,260 more than in the same period of 2025. The provisional total fertility rate for the past 12 months stood at 1.34, up from 1.30 in calendar year 2025.
