Finnish imports from Russia rose despite sanctions

Finnish imports from Russia increased in the first four months of 2026 despite EU sanctions, according to data obtained by Uutissuomalainen from Finnish Customs.

The total value of imports reached €285 million between January and April, up €15 million compared with the same period last year. The majority of the import value consisted of nickel and related products, while ammonia accounted for the largest volume. However, the flow of ammonia used in fertilizers is expected to decline following recent EU sanctions and increased Russian rail transport tariffs.

Since 2022, Finland’s annual imports from Russia have fallen from about €9 billion to roughly €1 billion.
