Faroese fishing sector highlights sustainability of trawl fishing

Faroese trawl fishing is a sustainable and resilient component of the national fishing industry, according to Jógvan Trondesen Andreasen, chair of the Suðurstreymoy Fishing Association (SÚF).

Andreasen welcomed the allocation of approximately 750 fishing days granted this year by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Fisheries under temporary legislation allowing the extension of Block 5B. He expressed hope that the next step will be a permanent solution integrating all of Block 5 with other fishing blocks, particularly addressing the possibility of transferring unused days to the following fishing year.

The SÚF chair also emphasized that the entire 30-year-old fishing day system should be reassessed now that the government has requested the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) to evaluate the allocation plan and the fishing rules that form the basis for annual fishing day allocations.
