Fire damages stairwell in Viitasaari apartment building

An apartment building in Viitasaari suffered extensive fire damage to its shared stairwell on 10 July, leaving the entire property temporarily uninhabitable and prompting a criminal investigation into suspected arson.

The blaze, which police are treating as a case of aggravated destruction of property, forced all residents into emergency accommodation while crews assess the damage and begin repairs.

Risto Mattila, chair of the building’s housing association board, said the blackened stairwell and lingering smoke odour had shattered the usual calm of the small central-Finnish town.

“I was at my summer cottage when I got the call from the property manager,” Mattila said. “By Saturday we saw the full extent—walls, ceilings and ventilation systems coated in soot. Our flats are still off-limits.”

Jarkko Hyppönen, the building’s property manager, said preliminary estimates suggest months of work to strip and rebuild damaged surfaces, replace the front door and clean or replace the ventilation system. Project manager Anu Luukkonen, brought in to oversee fire restoration, noted that summer shortages of materials and labour could further delay repairs.

Police have traced a vehicle seen near the scene and interviewed its occupants, but no arrests have been made. Authorities continue to appeal for public information regarding the suspected crime.
