Temperature plunge disrupts eastern Finland’s July tourism

Visitors to eastern Finland’s Huvi- ja Vesipuisto Visulahti on Wednesday found a summer attraction gripped by unseasonably cold weather, with temperatures up to 10 °C below July norms.

The park’s manager, Atte Räsänen, described the conditions as “disastrous” for an outdoor amusement business that relies on warm-weather crowds. “Our biggest attractions are outdoors, so this is hitting visitor numbers extremely hard,” Räsänen said.

Meteorologist Aleksi Lohtander at national broadcaster Yle said maximum daytime temperatures in the region were unlikely to exceed 13 °C in Mikkeli, compared with the usual July high of around 22 °C. The cold snap follows earlier variable weather that had already reduced visitor numbers well below expectations, Räsänen added.

Families who had travelled to Visulahti said they were adapting rather than cancelling plans. Tampere resident Elina Inkinen said her group would spend as much time outdoors as possible despite the rain. “We’ll just put on more clothes and carry on,” she said. Vaasa family Toni Perälä echoed the sentiment, noting that the family had not cancelled any reservations because of the wet weather.

Meteorologists expect temperatures to rise toward the weekend, with eastern Finland possibly exceeding 20 °C by Sunday.
