Police warn again of fraud calls using deepfake images of senior officers

Finnish police have warned of a new wave of fraudulent calls in which criminals impersonate senior officers using deepfake technology.

Calls are being made with video showing faces of known police figures, including National Police Commissioner Ilkka Koskimäki, according to a statement from the National Bureau of Investigation.

The bureau said some calls appear to use deepfake technology to create the fake images. The scammers aim to obtain victims’ payment or identification details, with cases targeting foreigners living in Finland.

Police reiterated that they do not make video calls to the public. They advised recipients to block unknown callers on Google Meet and only accept calls from known contacts.
