Three men charged with defrauding people with developmental disabilities

Three men aged 25 to 28 have been arrested at separate locations in Greater Copenhagen and charged with orchestrating a series of contact fraud cases, police said on Wednesday.

According to Copenhagen Police, the suspects operated what they described as a “call center” that specifically targeted people with developmental disabilities, falsely posing as police officers to trick victims into transferring money.

Police said more than 100 reports had been filed nationwide, with investigations conducted in collaboration with the National Center for IT-related Crime (NCIK).

“Our investigation shows that the three men jointly targeted people with developmental disabilities and defrauded them,” said Kasper Olander, a police superintendent with Copenhagen Police. “This is, in my view, an example of how cynical and immoral this type of fraud is.”

Two of the suspects are scheduled to appear in a closed-door preliminary hearing later the same day. Authorities did not disclose how the accused responded to the charges.
