Pienhuonehotelli expands to Helsinki with 150 modular rooms at main railway station

Finnish micro-hotel operator Uumen will open a 150-room facility inside Helsinki’s main railway station next spring, the company confirmed on Wednesday.

The new property, located in the west wing of the landmark station, will offer “door-closable lodging units” measuring roughly the size of a single bed plus a small desk—units that do not meet Finland’s formal room-size regulations. Construction begins this summer under a long-term lease from state rail operator VR. Modules are prefabricated off-site and installed as finished units.

Uumen already operates a 2025-vintage micro-hotel in Tampere’s historic Finlayson district, where the smallest rooms start at €39 per night. The Helsinki site will offer three module sizes: single, double and quad occupancy. Shared amenities—breakfast and gym access—will be provided through partnerships with nearby businesses.

“The Tampere launch exceeded expectations, and a central location like this justified expansion,” said Eetu Rahkola, CEO of Uumen, which posted €723,000 in revenue last year.

The Helsinki railway-station redevelopment aims to transform the terminal from a transit hub into a destination in its own right. The operator expects demand from business travelers, city breakers and passengers continuing by train or plane.
