Faroese government grants extra 750 fishing days to fleet segment 5B

Faroese authorities have approved an emergency measure granting 750 additional fishing days to vessels in fleet segment 5B for the 2026 fishing year. The decision, announced on Wednesday by Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen, temporarily suspends the standard allocation system under the Fisheries Act.

The measure does not alter the existing framework for annual fishing day quotas set by regulation, Nielsen emphasized. Instead, it provides a one-time exemption for segment 5B, which currently has 115 fishing days remaining in the year. The government described the move as a targeted, time-limited solution to address an urgent situation in the ongoing fishing season.

The proposal has been submitted for review to the Fisheries Council, the Association of Trawler Owners, the Coast Guard, and the Marine Research Institute. Public consultation remains open until Saturday, July 25.
