All varusmies deaths to be investigated thoroughly, union says

KOUVOLA—A 20-year-old conscript died at the Vekaranjärvi garrison in Kouvola on Monday, the Finnish Defence Forces confirmed. Police said no crime was suspected.

Yle reported that the death occurred during the conscript’s free time and that the Finnish Conscripts’ Union called for a comprehensive review of all such cases, regardless of when or how they occur.

“Every death is one too many,” said Mats Uotila, chair of the union. “At the same time, we must remember that conscription itself is not something to fear. Safety is built into the training from the outset.”

The union said it was in close contact with the Defence Forces and trusted that policies and training would be updated if necessary after any investigation.

“Whether the incident happens during service or free time, it must be examined thoroughly,” Uotila said. “After that, an assessment should be made of any need for corrective action.”

Conscript deaths remain rare relative to the roughly 20,000 Finns who perform national service each year, the union noted.

In March, another conscript died at the same garrison during a field exercise involving an all-terrain vehicle. The Defence Forces said Monday’s incident posed no danger to others and that the police investigation would continue as a cause-of-death inquiry.

The Karjalan Prikaati garrison flew its flag at half-mast and offered crisis support to fellow conscripts and staff present at the time of the incident.
