Varusmies dies during leave at Karjalan prikaati base

A conscript serving with the Finnish Defence Forces’ Karjalan prikaati died during off-duty time at the Vekaranjärvi garrison in Kouvola on Monday evening, the Finnish Army said on Tuesday.

The incident did not endanger others, and next of kin have been informed, the Army said. Crisis support is being provided to the deceased’s service comrades and personnel on site, with additional counselling available to all serving and working at Karjalan prikaati.

The unit will observe mourning by flying flags at half-mast on Tuesday. The South-East Finland police continue to investigate the death.
