Police officer shot while responding to fatal shooting in Nørresburg

Alexander Steffensen drove a wounded police officer to hospital after witnessing a fatal shooting in Nørresundby on Friday, the injured officer said to be in stable condition.

Steffensen told DR he was collecting a friend near Jørn’s Autolakering when he saw thick smoke and called emergency services. After picking up his friend, they drove past the body shop and found themselves caught in gunfire.

“As soon as we arrived, we saw a man running and then he fell. We heard shots—later we learned it was a police officer—and we turned around to keep feeding information to the emergency operator,” Steffensen said.

A panicked bystander tried to call for help as more shots were fired. A marked police car arrived slowly before the officer inside was struck in the leg and torso.

Steffensen, a driving instructor, moved the bleeding officer from the driver’s seat to the passenger side of a van and sped away despite gunfire at the scene.

“We took the chance and floored it. When we passed the crime scene, shooting was still going on, but our only thought was to get him out,” he said.

Emergency medics took over after the van met a physician response car en route to hospital. Police later said the officer underwent surgery and is in stable condition.
