DSB acknowledges passenger frustration after chaotic travel day

Danish State Railways (DSB) has acknowledged widespread frustration among passengers after severe disruptions forced the replacement of trains with buses on key routes across Denmark on Monday.

Long queues formed at major stations including Ringsted as DSB deployed emergency bus services to compensate for delayed track work that disrupted services between Jutland and Zealand.

“We fully understand the frustration,” said Tony Bispeskov, DSB’s communications director. “It is regrettable for the many passengers affected by these delays.”

Bispeskov urged affected travelers to check their travel time guarantees, noting that compensation may be available for extended journeys.

Emergency bus services were in operation between Fredericia and Odense and between Slagelse and Ringsted due to delayed track work on western Funen and delayed catenary system repairs near Ringsted. Banedanmark, Denmark’s rail infrastructure manager, had pushed back the expected resumption of train services to 9 p.m. on Monday.

“We look forward to normal operations tomorrow, which is what our commuters are especially eager for,” Bispeskov said.

DSB said it received late notice of the delays from Banedanmark and the Danish Road Directorate, which were managing the two projects. “They did everything possible to complete the work on time, but unfortunately it didn’t happen,” Bispeskov said. “Our task was to secure as many replacement buses as possible and ensure staff were available to assist passengers at stations.”

Banedanmark attributed the delay to severe weather on Sunday, which prevented completion of catenary work between Ringsted and Slagelse. “Working on the catenary system requires safe weather conditions for our staff,” said René Hestbæk, Banedanmark’s traffic control area manager. “We had to halt work yesterday and could only resume this morning.”

In addition to the bus replacements, all regional trains between Slagelse and Copenhagen Airport remain suspended until August 16 due to DSB staff shortages. Outside peak hours, train service between Nykøbing Falster, Næstved, and Copenhagen will operate once per hour.
