Lightning strike closes Tampere Orthodox church – damage assessed

Tampere’s Orthodox church has been temporarily closed after a lightning strike damaged its alarm and electrical systems.

The incident occurred on Saturday during a wedding ceremony, when a bolt struck the copper dome of the 19th-century landmark. Firefighters extinguished a small blaze on the dome, but the strike also disrupted power to the building’s crystal chandeliers and disabled the ventilation system.

“Visually, the main hall shows no damage,” said caretaker Mika Kangasaho, who was inside when the strike hit. “The chandeliers flickered and behaved strangely. I thought the lightning had hit nearby.”

The church’s golden Slavic cross, weighing about three metres, was dislodged and now lies in the entrance hall. Engineers from an electrical contractor are scheduled to inspect the damage on Tuesday to determine whether the building can host a major youth camp event planned for Saturday.

Kangasaho noted the church’s steep staircases and high ceilings make repairs challenging. “Good luck to the electricians on duty,” he said.
