Rising water levels dislodge timber in Kokemäenjoki, keep Pori city crews busy all day

Rising water levels in the Kokemäenjoki river have dislodged timber that is now floating downstream, prompting cleanup efforts by the city of Pori throughout Monday.

The logs have been spotted between the Rantakartano area and the city centre, according to city officials. Pori’s municipal crews have been removing the timber all day and operations are continuing.

“We’ve managed to retrieve about five large logs so far,” said Olli-Pekka Ihalainen, fieldwork supervisor at the city of Pori. “These appear to be old trunks, likely from collapsed riverbank revetments.”

Ihalainen noted that traditional submerged logs are rare today. The timber is more likely to have originated from earlier collapses of riverbank structures upstream near Ulvila.

The river’s water level has risen over the weekend due to heavy rainfall.
