On Saturday, visitors along the Kokemäenjoki River between Ulvila and Pori might have rubbed their eyes in disbelief as a giant rescue raft filled with people floated in the middle of the river. However, it was not a rescue situation but rather a unique way to celebrate Lassi Mäkynen’s 40th birthday.

Mäkynen explained that a friend acquired the massive raft, prompting them to consider the perfect occasion to use it. The group of friends decided to commemorate this milestone with an inland cruise, launching the raft near the Naparanta lean-to in Ulvila. Curious onlookers gathered to see the spectacle.

“This is harmless fun for young guys,” Mäkynen said with a laugh. The raft was at under half of its permitted capacity of 128 people, allowing ample space for movement and festivities.

Safety was a priority for the party, as all roughly fifty passengers were wearing life jackets, and the raft was equipped with jet skis, with a safety boat leading the way ready to assist if needed.

The captain and arranger of the raft was Eemeli Parviainen, a steamboat enthusiast from Tampere. While large rescue rafts are not commonly available in regular stores, Parviainen refrained from disclosing where he obtained it. “Just like mushroom pickers don’t reveal their best spots,” he said.

This floating party was purely for the enjoyment of friends, and Parviainen has no plans to rent out the raft for parties or events. “No, no, no. Money ruins the good vibe. This is all done out of love for the activity,” he remarked.
