Child drowns in Kempele swimming pit after rapid descent

A seven-to-14-year-old child died on Saturday at Kempele’s Ouluntulli swimming pit after bystanders failed to prevent a rapid submersion to depths of up to eight metres, the North Ostrobothnia Rescue Department said in an incident report.

The rescue service’s risk-control chief, Tomi Honkakunnas, told Yle that onlookers immediately tried to pull the child from the water but the victim sank too quickly. A tanker and fire truck happened to be parked nearby; witnesses ran to summon help and rescuers reached the pit within minutes.

Divers retrieved the child within seven minutes of being alerted. Despite immediate resuscitation, the child could not be revived. The site’s 4.5-metre platform and deep, narrow basin create a high-risk environment, Honkakunnas said, adding that Kempele authorities will now reassess safety arrangements.
