Police investigate deliberate placement of tree trunks on railway tracks near Ølgod

Police in southern Jutland have launched a manhunt after multiple tree trunks were found deliberately placed on railway tracks near the town of Ølgod, forcing a train to stop on Sunday morning.

Vice police inspector Søren Theilgaard Rønnov of South and Sønderjylland Police confirmed that forensic teams, dog handlers and drones were deployed to the scene to gather evidence including fingerprints and DNA. No injuries were reported when a train struck the obstacles.

“We take this very seriously,” Rønnov said. “Every time something is placed near or on the track bed there is a risk of derailment, which can be extremely dangerous.”

The incident closed the rail line from 16:00 and services resumed on schedule. Investigators believe the placement was intentional given the weather conditions and the distribution of the trunks over a long stretch of track.

Police also questioned local residents and received reports of illegal fireworks—specifically cannon fire—being set off in the area. “We cannot say if there is a connection, but it is possible the same people were involved,” Rønnov said.

Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen suspicious activity or individuals carrying large objects. Video footage is also being sought.
