Women compete for WTA points at Gentofte Open

Gentofte Open staged its first women’s singles draw on Sunday, marking the tournament’s debut for female players.

The event, held on gravel courts at Gentofte Tennisklub near Copenhagen, offers qualifying spots for an ITF tournament to be played at the same venue the following week.

“For Danish players, a local option like this—where they can earn WTA ranking points—is hugely important,” said Martin Jørgensen, tournament director of Gentofte Open.

He noted that the chance to compete for points without the expense of travelling to major events abroad is critical for young athletes without sponsorships. “It’s not cheap to fly from Japan to Gentofte, but they do it anyway,” Jørgensen said.

This year’s Gentofte Open, traditionally a men’s-only event, opened its women’s draw to players from Ukraine, Japan and New Zealand, who competed for up to 35 WTA points.

The men’s edition, running in week 31, will offer 25 ATP points.
