Minor damage is expected at Tampere’s Orthodox church after a lightning strike on Saturday sparked a small fire in its highest tower, the parish said on Sunday.
The blaze broke out during a baptism and wedding ceremony, forcing firefighters to partially dismantle the church’s dome to reach the flames. Work continued into the evening as crews used privately hired lifting equipment to access the tower, since municipal gear could not reach the height. The fire did not spread beyond the roof structure, but the strike damaged the building’s alarm and electrical systems.
Lightning also briefly halted firefighting efforts early Saturday evening. A parish employee maintained overnight watch at the site, the parish said.
Sunday’s liturgy was relocated to Nikolainkirkko, where a large congregation attended, according to Yle reporter Heli Mansikka on site.
The church, built in the late 19th century and a protected landmark, will reopen once repairs are complete.
