Artturi the tortoise loses both front legs after escape and amputation

Artturi, a four-toed tortoise, has lost both front legs after a two-week escape and subsequent amputation following an animal attack.

The pet disappeared from its enclosure in Kotka on Midsummer weekend and was found injured near its home 300 metres away. Elina Tuittu, Artturi’s owner, said the front limbs had been partially eaten by another animal, requiring emergency veterinary care.

Tuittu took the tortoise to Kulloo veterinary clinic in Linnunmäki, where staff prepared for limb amputation after initial wound cleaning. The surgery was performed the following day.

“I was afraid the verdict would be euthanasia,” Tuittu said. “Instead, they immediately began treating Artturi and preparing for the amputation.”

After the operation, Artturi refused food and required tube feeding. Tuittu said the tortoise’s condition improved markedly when handled by family members. “When I took it in my arms, kissed and petted it, it seemed to recognise us and began eating eagerly.”

Artturi has been home for a week and a half. Daily wound care includes rinsing with diluted betadine and applying healing gel. A recent veterinary check confirmed good recovery progress.

The tortoise now moves using its hind legs and family members are exploring mobility aids such as wider wheel axles to improve movement.

Tuittu plans to reward community helpers who joined the search, which involved dozens of volunteers and detection dogs.

Artturi is a four-toed tortoise and has lived with Tuittu for 37 years. Its exact age is unknown as it was already fully grown when acquired.
