Weather turns sharply across southern Norway

flood risk, heavy rain, norway weather, temperature drop

Southern Norway will see temperatures plummet by up to 12 degrees on Saturday as a cold front from the north replaces the recent continental heat wave, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute said Friday.

Oslo and Kristiansand may experience the steepest drop, with falls of around 12 °C forecast between Friday and Saturday, according to senior forecaster Idun Hana, speaking to Dagbladet.

Heavy rain and strong winds are expected to accompany the shift, with local downpours delivering between 20 mm and 40 mm per hour. The prolonged rainfall raises the risk of flooding and landslides, particularly in Østfold, Vestfold, Buskerud, Telemark and the Oslofjord region.

Thunderstorms are also possible as the polar air mass moves in, adding to the unsettled conditions. Temperatures in northern Norway will fall from 12–15 °C to around 11 °C, with coastal gales and mountain snow down to 700 metres in Troms and Finnmark.

Meteorologists cautioned that rainfall forecasts remain uncertain and will be updated as the system develops.
