Finland will have roughly 25,000 farms by 2035, down from about 38,700 today, according to a survey by Kantar Agri reported by Yle.

The Farms’ Development Outlook 2026–2035 survey, which collected responses from 5,633 farms across Finland in March–April 2026, also projects the average field area to grow from 58 hectares to about 90 hectares.

By 2035, 27% of arable land is expected to be on farms larger than 200 hectares, up from one-fifth currently. Larger farm size is linked to higher job satisfaction among farmers, the survey found.

Respondents were more optimistic about the profitability of crop production than livestock farming. Over half of farms are currently grain farms, though the number of specialty crop farms is rising.

Interest in incorporating farms as limited companies is also growing. Currently, about 4% of farms operate as limited companies, but this could rise to 15% in the coming years. Half of farms over 200 hectares are already partnerships or limited companies, and by 2035, this share is expected to exceed 70%.
