Faroese language professor Jógvan í Lon Jacobsen dies at 68

Jógvan í Lon Jacobsen, a professor of Faroese language, has died at the age of 68, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

Jacobsen began working at the University of the Faroe Islands in 1988. He held numerous committee positions, including chair of the Place Names Committee, the Language Committee, and was a member of the Dictionary Foundation. He played a key role in the creation of the Faroese Dictionary, published in 1998, and served as its editor-in-chief for nearly 20 years.

Jacobsen also hosted radio programs on Útvarp Føroya, where he was known as “Málmaðurin” (The Language Man), a nod to his passion for sports.
