A Danish Sea Rescue Society boat capsized during a rescue operation off Æbelø north of Funen on 20 June, forcing its four volunteer crew members into the water, the society’s Juelsminde station reports.

Skipper Jimmy Hansen and his team were attempting to free a grounded sailboat when two large waves struck their open rib boat, Loke, causing it to overturn. Hansen said the risk of capsizing is known when towing another vessel due to the extreme pressure involved.

The station has since replaced Loke with Freja, a heavier, closed-cabin vessel. Hansen noted that even in rough seas, the new boat provides a far greater sense of security. The cabin also improves safety and comfort in cold weather, allowing the crew to close the door and use heating.

An investigation by the Danish and Swedish sea rescue societies concluded the capsizing was caused by a combination of difficult sea conditions, strong resistance from the grounded sailboat, and an unexpected shift in the direction of the tow.

Danish Sea Rescue Society operates 14 stations, all staffed by volunteers.
