The Faroese national church has finalised plans for a new church in Argir and submitted them to the Ministry of Culture, according to Bishop Jógvan Fríðriksson.
Minister of Culture Bárður á Lakjuni told public broadcaster KVF he has received the proposal but cannot say when a decision will be made, though it may come before or after the Ólavsøka festival.
The project will be jointly funded by the church council, the national government, and the Faroese church, each covering a third of the cost. Part of the funding will come from the sale of the old church building, which has been sold to Kvinnuhúsið. The women’s centre will take over the building on 1 January 2028, with payment deferred until that date.
Construction is expected to take 22 months, meaning Argir will be without a church for at least that long once the old building is vacated.
