Aleksanteri Kivimäki, convicted in the Vastaamo data breach, will stay on Finland’s wanted list until authorities physically detain him, the Criminal Sanctions Agency confirmed to Yle.
“A phone call is not enough—he must appear in person and begin serving his sentence,” said Maria Kulmala, head of the agency’s enforcement unit. The warrant remains active until Kivimäki is either captured or reports to prison.
Police issued the warrant in June after the Supreme Court on Monday refused to grant Kivimäki leave to appeal, finalising his prison term. His defence lawyer, Peter Jaari, said Kivimäki was disappointed by the ruling, messaging him that “the system is rotten.”
Jaari, who has been in text contact with Kivimäki, believes his client is no longer in Finland. “A few weeks ago he wasn’t here. The strong impression is that he isn’t now,” Jaari told Yle on Tuesday morning. He has urged Kivimäki to contact authorities promptly, suggesting cooperation could aid his case.
Kulmala declined to specify whether the warrant is national or international. International warrants involve a full assessment of foreign ties or residence history, potentially leading to a European Arrest Warrant request to prosecutors.
Kivimäki has been wanted before. Finland currently has about 60 active international arrest warrants.
