Rare lumpfish return to Nordsøen Oceanarium

The Nordsøen Oceanarium in Hirtshals has again put lumpfish on display after more than a year without them, DR reports.

Two small lumpfish, caught as bycatch by Portuguese fishermen, are now swimming in the large oceanarium tank alongside rays, sharks, and schooling fish.

Chief biologist Kristina Skands Ydesen said the species is a notable attraction. “It’s an interesting and fun fish to have. It’s very different from the other fish swimming around here, so it’s also an exciting addition for our guests.”

The lumpfish, which can grow over 3.5 metres long and weigh up to 2.3 tonnes when fully grown, has been a symbol of the oceanarium since it acquired its first specimen in 2001.

“It’s a fish that has played a role here and been part of our history. I think it’s because it’s a bit of an odd fish that captures people’s attention more than others do,” Ydesen said.

The oceanarium’s previous lumpfish were euthanised in May last year due to untreated wounds.
